Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Addis Ababa to Dinsho - Park Headquarters

Drive from Addis Ababa to Dinsho, gateway to Bale Mountains National Park. The journey takes you through the Ethiopian highlands with stops at scenic viewpoints. Arrive at Dinsho and check in at the park headquarters for registration and briefing. Take an afternoon walk around the headquarters area for your first wildlife encounters - likely spotting mountain nyala, Menelik's bushbuck, and warthogs. Visit the small museum for park orientation. Evening briefing about the unique ecosystems of the Bale Mountains, including the largest extent of Afro-alpine habitat on the continent and home to more endemic mammals than any other site in Ethiopia.

Day 2: Sanetti Plateau and Ethiopian Wolves

Drive up to the Sanetti Plateau, the world's largest alpine plateau above 3,000 meters. This unique ecosystem is home to the largest population of the endangered Ethiopian wolf, with about half of the world's remaining 500 individuals living here. Spend the day searching for and observing these beautiful canids in their natural habitat. The plateau also offers stunning landscapes with giant lobelia plants, alpine lakes, and dramatic rock formations. Visit Tullu Dimtu, the second highest peak in Ethiopia at 4,377 meters. Look for other wildlife including mountain nyala, rock hyrax, and numerous bird species endemic to the Ethiopian highlands.

Day 3: Harenna Forest Exploration

Descend into the Harenna Forest, a magical cloud forest on the southern slopes of the Bale Mountains. This is one of Ethiopia's largest remaining forests and home to unique biodiversity. Take guided walks through the forest looking for endemic birds including the yellow-fronted parrot, Abyssinian catbird, and numerous sunbird species.
